TribLive Taste Test: Ginger beer

You don’t usually see a lot of ginger beer with sediment — a lot of sediment — sunk down at the bottom of the bottle.
But that didn’t stop the TribLive Taste Test squad from trying Uncle Waithley’s “Vincy” Brew Ginger Beer, along with several other varieties of ginger beer, which is ginger ale’s bad-tempered cousin.
Brewed as a carbonated beverage using ginger, yeast and sugar, ginger beer has a sharper, spicier kick than traditional ginger ale. It can be sipped on its own or used as a mixer. In its Caribbean home, ginger beer is mixed with rum.
Uncle Waithley’s kicked theirs up a few notches by using lime, turmeric and a hint of scotch bonnet for a little extra spicy kick.
We tried it along with Q, Bundaberg and Fentiman’s ginger beers, all of which are available in local grocery stores. Which one will be our favorite to mix into a Dark’n’Stormy cocktail? Find out!
